We glued feathers and fur onto our farm animal masks today. We worked in the Vets Surgery helping all the variety of sick and injured pets. We started making cages for our pets but then used the "cages" as robot helmets too! We built robot houses out of big plastic bricks in the hallway.
We made farm animal masks after our visit to Castle Ward. Mrs Mc Allister brought in her little black lamb. We all loved seeing it and petting it. It got very tired and needed to nap. It even had a little run outside with us. Mrs Rutledge wrote a clever rhyme about the lamb's visit to school! (See the notice board)
We had a fantastic outing to Castle Ward today. Miss Corkin read us lovely stories about each of the animals we went to see. We also had a picnic break and a picnic lunch. The rain stayed away and we were all soooooo good. There are lots of photographs on the board beside the library pockets in school.
We each made our own biscuit dough mixture using butter, flour, a little sugar and water. We used cow, sheep, horse and hen shapes to cut out a biscuit shape. We will eat them tomorrow.
After lunch we watched the Hurly Burly man doing the "Enormous Turnip" story. We were all very interested because it was a little different from our story. It was very good.
We made more farm animal pictures by drawing around templates. Mrs Johnston was in for lunch and we did a farm animal rhyme time after lunch.
We painted pictures of Black and white animals today. They are on display in the hallway. We also did careful balancing on a higher walkway outside today. We were all very brave and had many turns as we got better and better at it. The students were also encouraging more of us to climb the wooden "hump" by pulling on the rope. We had a special puppet show about the lazy old farmer and "Farmer Duck", we listened very well as the story for the puppets was played on a CD.
We were acting out our new "play" where we sing the story of the enormous turnip! We also made black and white marble rolling pictures with the student and played a fun farm game on the computer. We had great fun with the sand tray spilling over into the builders tray today for extra enjoyment. We couldn't go out because of the pouring rain, but we played on the ASCO gym inside instead. In the afternoon we heard the story about the Ten Town Pond. We counted the ten fish that were put into the nice clean pond.
We had a fascinating visit from Charlotte of Zoolab. She brought along several creatures and told us interesting facts about them. We also had a chance to look closely at each one and touch it or hold it if we wanted to. We met:
Gary ~ the giant snail ~ who has 2 noses and lives in the dark forest eating leaves.
Plop ~ the millipede ~ who has 240 legs and also lives in the forest eating leaves and making
poos that help the trees grow big!
Bogey ~ the tree frog ~ who likes to be kept wet, he eats flies and swallows with his eyes, GULP!
Crazy Pete, Eddie and Glynnis ~ the cockroaches ~ they are the fastest in the world, they have
been around since the dinosaurs, they eat ANYTHING!
Zeus ~ the corn snake ~ he slithers along the ground, he eats mice. When he grows he slithers
out of his old small skin and grows a new bigger one. He smells with his tongue.
Cuddles ~ the tarantula ~ we didn't touch him because he has dangerous prickly hairs, he eats
bugs by moving slowly then POUNCE!
Houdini ~ the rabbit ~ he is soft and cuddly with big ears for good listening and eyes on the
side of his face for good looking. He can jump REALLY high. He loves eating carrots.
We learnt a few new words too:
Hibernate ~ animals go to sleep in the cold winter
Nocturnal ~ animals that are awake when we are sleeping
Antennae ~ feelers on top of insects heads
We were all VERY good and really enjoyed the visitors.
We were all very pleased to be back at school today. We made black and white pictures and did some lovely paintings of farm animals. We went out to enjoy the sunshine and playing with our friends. (See Eco news too) We enjoyed rhyme time, we are all learning to recognise our written names with no picture symbol to help us. We sang songs and rhymes about farm animals. We chose farm library books to take home too.
We were all very excited to find that 2 of the eggs in the incubator had already hatched this morning!!! We were able to watch the other eggs all morning and saw 1 chick hatching during school. The baby chicks are all wet and wobbly when they first hatch but they soon get fluffy and strong. Georgia's granny brought in a few other chicks that had hatched yesterday. We could also see the tiny baby quail chick, having seen the tiny quail egg last week. We also had a visit from the Easter bunny while we were out checking on our vegetable garden. We each found 1 bunny egg to put in our baskets. We also made chocolate easter nests and decorated our easter eggs to roll.
After lunch we all took turns to be Little Bunny Foo Foo or the good fairy and everyone sang their words beautifully. (See photos in the gallery)
